What we do
what we do
Hazel
I was expelled from school at 15. I felt like there was nothing else for me to do so I started drinking and taking drugs.
A lot of other people were doing it too. You’re just in that area and you think it’s the norm. You don't have school or hobbies.
Eventually I realised I had to change. I had a young daughter and although her dad was around at first, the relationship didn’t work out.
I knew I needed a job to support us both and that I needed qualifications to do this. I don't want to start all over again. I want to support me and my daughter. For her to do well I have to look after myself as well.
I found out about an IT skills course at my local YWCA centre and decided to go along. I loved it so much I decided to take more courses. I’ve got lots of different qualifications to add to my CV now.
They encouraged me to try lots of different things. When I told them I enjoyed painting and decorating they helped me get on to a college course. I’ve got my level three certificate now.
I knew I wanted to do something, I just didn't know what. I looked up hair and beauty but there isn't really any money in it and so many women do it these days. I want a decent wage. I want my house to be nice and the money to do it.
Find out how your support can help young women like Hazel here.

"Hazel still comes along for mother and baby swimming sessions and our 'Food for thought' course. She’s got more direction in life now and a passion for getting involved and changing things."
