Llanelli

YWCA young women's centre in provides a safe meeting place in which young women can learn new skills, gain confidence, get information and enjoy a relaxed and supportive environment and get involved in a range of activities.

The project in Llanelli, established at the end of the 19th century, evolved to keep pace with the needs of young women as society has changed. The town, with a population of 42,000, relied for decades on heavy industry for its employment base. But in recent years Llanelli has seen massive job losses in the motor industry, tin plating and the docks.

There are about 4,000 young women aged between 16-25 in Llanelli and very high youth unemployment of both young men and women. This region was the pilot area for the Government's New Deal initiative and employment schemes have been introduced. As a result of research into the needs of young women in the town today, the work of the project has been refocused.

We welcome young women aged between 11 and 30 years who may be
    unemployed or on low income
    early school leavers
    young mothers
suffering from low self-esteem or depression, isolation or loneliness
    experiencing violent or abusive relationships
    having learning difficulties
wanting to try new activities and gain new experiences.

Heartfelt thanks to all our funders, including ESF, who make it possible for us to do our work.
